Developing open standards standards is a group activity. Many widely used standards come from the work of a small group of committed contributors, and often the group is smaller than the contributors themselves would prefer and smaller than it should be given the reach of the work.
A broader group helps with both adoption and sharing the understanding of the work. We've seen this in the CNCF CloudEvents project, with representatives from over 40 companies involved overall, and well over 20 people routinely joining the weekly calls before CloudEvents went 1.0.
The CNCF xRegistry project (repo), is the next step on the "standardized metadata for events" journey, and while we have a great core group of collaborators and have created a very substantial body of work that is nearing its 1.0 milestone, and also have several adjacent OSS projects to prove out the specs, it would be great have more interested companies and people on board to validate the work that has been done so far.
The governance rules in the CNCF Serverless Working Group that is the "home" for those projects allow that anyone can participate in the process. You don't need to be a member of the CNCF and you don't have to be from a big company to contribute. As a developer or architect, your input is valuable, even if it's not spec writing but just sharing your opinion. It's a chance to learn and influence the direction of the industry and looks pretty good on the resume.
The easiest way to join the conversation is to join our weekly calls. The xRegistry sub-working group with calls on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you're interested in shaping the future of eventing metadata, we encourage you to join us.
For the Zoom info, see the CNCF public events calendar. This specification is being developed by the CNCF Serverless Working Group. This working group meets every Thursday at 9AM PT (USA Pacific) (World Time Zone Converter):
Please see the meeting minutes doc for the latest information on how to join the calls. Recording from our calls are available here, and older ones are here. Periodically, the group may have in-person meetings that coincide with a major conference. Please see the meeting minutes doc for any future plans.
